Hyderabad: Outsourcing workers in government departments are questioning the government’s commitment to cutting out middlemen. Recently, thousands of new outsourcing positions were filled, while existing employees face job insecurity due to delayed salaries and non-renewed contracts. This mixed approach has left many confused about why some outsourcing positions are ending while new ones are created.
On July 19, the government approved the hiring of 2,494 outsourced workers and 61 housekeeping and security staff for the Irrigation and Command Area Development Department. These positions, filled through a third-party provider, fall under the Engineer-in-chief’s management. According to a Government Order by Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Principal Secretary, these roles will last for one year, until regular positions are filled, or the need for them ends.
This move has puzzled many, especially since salary delays are affecting numerous employees, and many have lost jobs this year due to contract issues. Outsourcing workers question why these agencies are still used when the government promised a dedicated corporation. “We lose about Rs 5,000 monthly as commission to these agencies. This is exploitation. We hope Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addresses our grievances,” workers expressed.
Outsourcing employees recently protested near Indira Park in Hyderabad, organized by a Telangana JAC committee, urging the government to address their concerns. They demand regular jobs, end of contract employment, fair pay, benefits, compensation for families of deceased workers, and an end to agency exploitation. They also want a dedicated recruitment corporation. Previously, the state formed a committee to review staffing needs, offering hope to outsourced employees. The government is considering proposals for a recruitment corporation and a Cabinet Sub-Committee is examining workers’ issues, ensuring their rights are protected.
