Hyderabad: On Thursday, Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU) marked its 61st Foundation Day at its auditorium in Rajendranagar. MLC Professor M Kodandaram gave a speech titled “Glorious Legacy – Future Challenges,” discussing how agricultural universities were set up post-independence to address the country’s food requirements. He noted PJTAU’s contribution in developing crop varieties recognized across India.
Prof. Kodandaram pointed out that while land reforms and the Green Revolution have brought benefits, they have also increased societal inequalities. Small and marginal farmers in Telangana face significant issues, including high rates of farmer suicides. He urged the university to focus on helping these farmers, who are burdened by high production costs and unfair crop prices. He stressed the need for the university to redefine its role and devise new strategies to support struggling farmers.
He praised the university’s recent “Scientists at the Farmer’s Doorstep” initiative and suggested continuing such efforts.
PJTAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Aldas Janaiah expressed his happiness in celebrating the 61st Foundation Day during his term. He highlighted new projects, such as centers for Digital Agriculture, Natural Resources, and the Environment. Vice-Chancellor Janaiah also announced a dual degree program with Western Sydney University in Australia.
