Police catch over 1,500 drink-drivers in Hyderabad and Cyberabad crackdown

The Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police continue their crackdown on drink-driving. This effort recently led to 1,001 cases in Hyderabad and 527 in Cyberabad, resulting in jail time for 86 individuals.

Authorities intensified checks over the weekend. In Cyberabad, 527 people were arrested, including 404 motorcyclists, 24 auto-rickshaw drivers, 93 car drivers, and six heavy vehicle operators.

Offenders showed varied Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) levels. Police reported that 185 had BAC between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Seventy-one had BAC from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, while 24 showed levels from 301 mg/100 ml to 500 mg/100 ml. All will face court proceedings.

Among those caught, 10 were aged 18-20. The largest group was aged 21-30 with 210 arrests, followed by 188 aged 31-40, and 84 aged 41-50.

In a one-week period from July 28, 2025, to August 2, 2025, courts processed 243 cases. Fines were imposed on 221 individuals, while 22 were jailed. Eighteen received two-day sentences, and four others received three or four-day sentences. Nineteen were assigned community service.

During the same week, Hyderabad police reported 1,001 drink-driving cases from July 26 to August 1. Arrests included 810 two-wheeler drivers, 91 auto-rickshaw drivers, 96 car drivers, and four heavy vehicle operators. One person was aged 18-20, while the 21-30 age group had the most offenders with 381 arrests. The 31-40 and 41-50 age groups followed with 328 and 196 arrests, respectively. In total, 64 were sentenced to jail.

A police official warned that drink-driving leading to fatal accidents would invoke charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita. This charge, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, could result in up to 10 years in prison and a fine.
