Hyderabad police are urging residents to take extra safety steps this summer as many families leave for vacations, leaving their homes empty and vulnerable to thefts and scams.

Officials warn that empty homes can attract criminal gangs, especially during the holiday season. To reduce the risk, they’ve shared several key safety tips to protect homes from robberies.

The first and most important advice: don’t leave gold jewellery or valuables at home while traveling. Store them in a bank locker or other secure place. Police also recommend installing central locking systems for doors and using security alarms with motion sensors.

To further boost home security, residents should set up CCTV cameras at all entry and exit points. These cameras should be connected to mobile apps for live monitoring. It’s also important to keep the DVR system in a locked or hidden spot inside the house.

Hiring a trusted watchman or security guard can help protect property in your absence. According to a Cyberabad police official, many people invest heavily in their homes but ignore basic safety measures, such as installing cameras. These tools not only help protect your property but also assist police in solving crimes.

Cyberabad DCP (Crimes) LC Naik emphasized that community cooperation and simple safety steps can prevent many incidents. He advised residents to inform their local police station about their travel dates and to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 100.

    Other important precautions include:

    – Keep two-wheelers locked inside the compound and, if possible, use wheel chains.
    – Don’t leave garbage, milk packets, or newspapers outside, as they signal that no one is home.
    – Use curtains to cover locked doors so they aren’t visible from outside.
    – Leave a few lights on inside and outside to make the house look occupied.

Avoid hiding spare keys in obvious spots like shoe racks, under pillows, over cupboards, or inside dressing tables. Also, don’t park vehicles in dark or isolated areas. Choose well-lit, busy locations instead.

For those living in apartments or gated communities, forming a local safety committee can help improve security for everyone. Police are also encouraging residents to support night patrolling efforts by staying connected with law enforcement.

Make sure you have the contact numbers of your local police station or beat constable easily accessible. Only share your travel plans with trusted people. Avoid posting your holiday schedules on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram, as this can alert criminals that your home is vacant.

By taking these simple steps, you can ensure your home stays safe while you enjoy your summer holidays.
