Hyderabad is witnessing an increase in heart failure cases, especially among working-age adults. To address this, Star Hospitals has opened the Star Heart Failure Clinic in the city. This clinic aims to help patients not only from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh but also from all over India, offering top-notch care and addressing a pressing health issue.
In recent years, the number of heart disease treatments has nearly doubled. Sudden cardiac deaths have risen sharply, with 282 deaths in Telangana in 2022, mainly affecting men aged 30 to 50. Hyderabad faces high rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and stress, making it a focal point for heart issues and a fitting location for this new clinic. The goal is to reduce deaths, enhance life quality, and lower hospital readmissions for heart failure patients.
Around 8–10 million Indians live with heart failure, and up to 1.8 million new cases emerge each year, highlighting the urgent need for specialized care.
The Star Heart Failure Clinic offers thorough diagnostics, risk assessments, and Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy (GDMT), which has proven survival benefits. It provides daycare infusions, cardiac rehab, lifestyle support, and evaluations for advanced therapies like heart transplants and LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Devices). Long-term follow-up care aims to prevent relapses and hospital stays. Importantly, the clinic addresses a significant care gap, as national figures show only 25–47% of Indian patients currently receive recommended heart failure treatments, despite their potential to lower death rates by up to 60%.
At the clinic’s opening, heart transplant survivors and chronic heart failure patients shared powerful stories of survival, highlighting the transformative power of timely, organized care.
