Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to stop the state government from clearing 400 acres of forest land near the University of Hyderabad in Kancha Gachibowli. The party called it a strong warning to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s leadership, which they described as misguided and shortsighted.
N V Subash, the BJP’s chief spokesperson in the state, criticized the Congress-led government for focusing on flashy projects like “Hydra” and “Pharma City” instead of real development. He said these plans are just attempts to hide the government’s failures.
Subash pointed out that the Hydra project had already come under court criticism, and now the Pharma City proposal is facing similar issues. “It’s like they haven’t learned anything. Destroying a forest just to raise money is deeply irresponsible,” he said.
He also praised the students of the University of Hyderabad for standing up against the government’s plan. Their protests helped bring the issue to the Supreme Court’s attention. “Their dedication to protecting the environment is truly admirable,” Subash added.
The Supreme Court, led by Justices B R Gavai and George Masih, said the initial report they received showed serious environmental damage was already happening. Trees had been cut down in large numbers, which the Court called a major threat to the environment.
Subash mocked the government’s last-minute formation of a committee to review land use policies. He said it made no sense to destroy forests first and then talk about saving the environment afterward.
The BJP said it will continue working to protect Telangana’s natural resources and hold the state government accountable for its harmful actions.
