Tummala Nageswara Rao, the Agriculture Minister of Telangana, has reached out to the central government again, stressing the severe shortage of urea affecting the state’s farmers. As the Kharif season begins, the need for urea has increased, but supplies are not meeting this demand.
Minister Rao noted in his letter that out of the 5 lakh metric tons of urea allocated to Telangana for April, May, and June, only 3.06 lakh tons have been received. This shortage of about 1.94 lakh metric tons is causing difficulties for the state’s farmers.
The central government plans to deliver 1.60 lakh metric tons of urea in July, but 60% of this is expected to be imported. The minister highlighted that the absence of allocated ships for transport is worsening the situation, raising concerns among farmers about getting the needed fertiliser on time.
To tackle these issues, Tummala made specific requests. He asked for immediate ship allocation to transport 0.97 lakh metric tons of imported urea for July. He also called for an increase in local urea supply from RFCL, requesting a boost from 30,800 tons to 60,000 tons. Additionally, he sought extra urea to cover the shortfall from earlier months.
This appeal was sent to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda, along with Union Ministers Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay. Minister Tummala’s request highlights farmers’ reliance on timely urea delivery, urging a quick response from the federal government.
