Hyderabad: On Sunday, Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, announced a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Telangana. This process aims to set a national example, following Bihar‘s recent successful effort. Speaking to Booth Level Officers (BLOs), he emphasized their crucial role in maintaining the integrity of India’s elections. Their hard work ensures clean and accurate electoral rolls.
Kumar highlighted that the world closely observes India’s democratic process. He praised Bihar for flawlessly conducting their SIR, which allowed 75 million voters to cast their votes without any complaints, re-polling, or recounting. He commended Bihar’s BLOs for achieving this high standard.
He expressed that Telangana would experience advancements in electoral management after the voter roll update. Kumar pointed out that low voter turnout in urban areas remains a challenge due to voter indifference, whereas rural voters consistently show enthusiasm by standing in long lines to vote.
He stressed that elections in India are conducted according to the law, and all involved parties must follow these regulations. Kumar also mentioned that India recently took on the leadership of International IDEA, a global acknowledgment of India’s election management expertise.
India’s democratic system involves over 900 million voters across 28 states and eight Union Territories, illustrating the vast scale of its electoral process.
