Hyderabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved all 34 government medical colleges in Telangana. This ensures that 4,090 MBBS seats will remain available for the upcoming academic year.
The NMC praised Telangana for its efforts to address faculty shortages in medical colleges. The state implemented a major promotion drive to boost teaching staff and meet requirements.
As part of these efforts, 44 senior professors were promoted to Additional Directors of Medical Education and assigned as principals and superintendents of teaching hospitals. Additionally, 278 associate professors became professors, filling leadership gaps. Promotions for 231 assistant professors to associate professor positions are also underway.
Due to recruitment restrictions, higher positions are being filled through internal promotions. However, a notification has been issued to hire 607 assistant professors directly. The Finance Department approved hiring for another 714 positions to further strengthen faculty.
The Department of Medical Education detailed these initiatives to the NMC, which expressed satisfaction with the state’s dedication to improving medical education. In response to NMC’s concerns about bed capacity, the government is adding over 6,000 beds across 21 teaching hospitals to improve patient care and student training.
To monitor quality, the government set up Medical College Monitoring Committees (MCMCs) for each college. These committees conduct regular inspections and planning to ensure compliance with NMC standards.
Officials informed the NMC about the establishment of 25 new medical colleges from 2022 to 2024. Construction of necessary infrastructure and hospitals is in progress. The NMC reviewed the developments and pushed for quick completion to benefit students. They instructed that all compliance issues be resolved in four months, with existing permissions confirmed.
The Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences is preparing for the MBBS counselling process. The NEET state ranks will be released soon, and counselling will follow the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) guidelines and schedule.
