Hyderabad: The Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) is set to launch full-scale coding courses for students from Class VI to Intermediate starting in the 2025-26 academic year.
Officials have announced that coding will be taught in 238 Gurukul schools across the state. Last year, only one school in Moinabad offered coding classes, but due to positive results, the program is now being expanded statewide.
To support this initiative, TGSWREIS has signed a five-year agreement with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a UK-based organization. The foundation will help design the curriculum, teaching methods, and monitor the training process.
Students will learn subjects such as artificial intelligence (AI), coding, machine learning, robotics, and online tools. Initially, five students from each school were part of a pilot project, which showed promising outcomes. As a result, coding will now become a regular subject, with students receiving two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of project work. Textbooks will also be provided.
To further help students prepare for future job opportunities, a coding club has been started in each school. One boys’ school and one girls’ school per zone have been designated as coding centers, or “spokes,” each staffed with six trained instructors. In total, 42 instructors across seven zones have completed their training.
Additionally, 1,190 students have been trained as coding mentors—five in each of the 238 schools. Each mentor will teach 15 students, aiming to create a total of 89,250 new coders. This is the first time children in these schools will receive formal education in coding and technology.
