Hyderabad Student Uses Eye-Tracking Technology to Improve Two-Wheeler Safety

In India, two-wheelers make up nearly 70% of vehicles in cities like Chennai, Jaipur, and Nagpur. However, riding a two-wheeler is much riskier than driving a car. Studies show that two-wheeler riders are 30 times more likely to have accidents, leading to many deaths and injuries.

To address this issue, Sodadasi Rahul, an M Tech student from Mahindra University in Hyderabad, has conducted a study on rider distractions. His research, titled “Understanding Driver Distractions in Two-Wheelers Using Eye-Tracker,” uses advanced eye-tracking technology to study how riders focus while driving.

Eye-tracking technology works by using cameras and algorithms to track where and how long a rider looks at different things. This helps researchers understand riders’ attention levels, distractions, and reactions to their surroundings.

In his study, Rahul observed riders on an 8.8 km route from Bahadurpally X Road to Jeedimetla Industrial Area. His research identified three main types of distractions:
    1. When riders take their eyes off the road.
    2. When they remove their hands from the handlebars.
    3. When their mind wanders, such as when they are deep in thought or talking to a passenger.

These distractions greatly increase the risk of accidents. Rahul’s findings highlight the urgent need for measures to keep riders focused on the road.

Rahul’s research has received recognition at the International Conference on Challenges and Innovations for Sustainable Smart Cities (CISSC-2025). His paper won the ‘Best Paper Award’ at the event, which was organized by Punjab Engineering College in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Speaking about his motivation, Rahul said, “I have seen many two-wheeler accidents over the years. Unlike cars, two-wheelers offer little protection, making their riders more vulnerable. My research shows that distractions, like engaging in secondary tasks while riding, play a major role in accidents.”

Rahul’s work has significant implications for road safety. By identifying the main distractions, his research can help develop awareness campaigns and training programs to reduce accident risks.

As he continues his research, Rahul hopes to make a lasting impact on two-wheeler safety. His study shows how technology can help understand human behavior and improve road safety across the country.
