The state government in Hyderabad is looking into the damage at the barrages of the Kaleshwaram project. The Irrigation Minister, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, stated that accountability will be determined after a judicial commission submits its report. Some officials have already faced consequences after a vigilance inquiry.
The Kaleshwaram project experienced serious damage, including leaks in two of the three barrages and a collapse of the Medigadda barrage structure. An expert committee from the National Dam Safety Authority recommended interim measures to protect the barrages, such as keeping the gates open and undertaking monsoon flood protection works.
The Congress government prioritizes irrigation and aims to maximize new ayacut under cultivation efficiently. Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized the importance of judicious spending and avoiding waste of public funds in irrigation projects. The government is focused on creating larger new ayacut with minimal expenses and in a shorter timeframe.
The minister inspected the Sundilla, Annaram, and Medigadda barrages and reviewed repair progress. He expressed disappointment in the Kaleshwaram project’s non-usable state despite the significant investment. The government is committed to holding accountable those responsible for any misappropriation or misuse of public funds related to the project.
During his visits to the barrages, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy urged officials to expedite repairs as per NDSA guidelines. The expert committee advised against water storage in damaged barrages to prevent further harm. Monsoon flood protection measures have been implemented to safeguard the structures.
