Hyderabad: Amid growing complaints over water scarcity and irregular drinking water supply in the rapidly developing Gandipet region, a public movement titled “Walk for Water” has been announced across multiple municipalities in Rangareddy district.
The initiative is being led by P. Karthik Reddy, BRS Party In-charge for Rajendra Nagar Constituency, who has appealed to colony associations, welfare societies, and residents to unite and raise their voice over the ongoing water supply issues affecting the region.
Residents Facing Water Shortages Despite Rapid Growth
According to the appeal letter circulated among residents and welfare associations, Gandipet Mandal — one of the fastest-growing urban regions around Hyderabad — has been facing:
- Chronic water scarcity
- Severely irregular water supply
- Inadequate water allocation
- Supply disruptions in residential communities
The letter states that despite Gandipet Mandal emerging as a major financial and residential growth zone in Telangana, residents continue to struggle for access to basic drinking water.
The region includes rapidly expanding residential hubs such as:
- Narsingi
- Manikonda
- Bandlaguda Jagir
- Puppalaguda
- Kokapet surroundings
- Gandipet belt
Many of these areas have witnessed massive real estate growth over the last few years, with thousands of apartment units, gated communities, villas, and commercial developments emerging around the Outer Ring Road corridor.
Key Demands Raised by Residents
The organizers of the “Walk for Water” initiative have placed several demands before the authorities.
The demands include:
- Assured alternate-day water supply without fail
- Substantial increase in water allocation to the region
- Improved supply management based on population growth
- Rollback of alleged unfair municipal billing charges
The organizers stated that residents should not be burdened with charges linked to previous municipal periods where certain collections were allegedly not implemented properly.
Public Walks Planned in Three Locations
As part of the campaign, public gatherings and awareness walks have been scheduled across three major locations in the Gandipet region.
The programme schedule announced is:
- May 15 – Bandlaguda Corporation – 4 PM
- May 16 – Narsingi Municipality – 4 PM
- May 17 – Manikonda Municipality – 4 PM
Residents, colony associations, apartment communities, and welfare groups have been requested to participate in large numbers.
“Water is Our Right”
In the appeal, organizers described the movement as a peaceful public initiative aimed at drawing the government’s attention toward the worsening water situation in the region.
The statement emphasized that:
“Water is our right. Let us walk together for water, for our rights, and for the future of our community.”
The organizers also stated that repeated representations and requests regarding water supply issues have allegedly not resulted in meaningful action so far.
Rapid Urbanization Increasing Pressure on Infrastructure
Urban planning experts say the Gandipet-Narsingi-Manikonda corridor has witnessed explosive growth over the last decade due to:
- IT corridor expansion
- ORR connectivity
- Luxury residential projects
- Commercial development
- Migration into western Hyderabad
However, residents in several newly developed layouts and apartment communities have frequently raised concerns regarding:
- Water supply shortages
- Low water pressure
- Dependence on private tankers
- Delayed infrastructure upgrades
- Inconsistent municipal supply schedules
Local residents say the growing population in the region requires faster expansion of water infrastructure and more reliable supply management.
Call for Government Attention
The “Walk for Water” initiative is expected to bring renewed focus on infrastructure pressures in western Hyderabad and surrounding municipalities.
Residents and welfare associations say the movement is intended to highlight the urgent need for:
- Better urban planning
- Improved water allocation
- Infrastructure upgrades
- Transparent supply schedules
- Long-term water security planning
With summer demand increasing and residential expansion continuing rapidly across the Gandipet belt, the upcoming public campaign is likely to attract significant attention from residents and local authorities alike.
