Hyderabad is taking a big step to improve its water supply and revive the Musi River. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) plans to start work on phases 2 and 3 of the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme. This project will cost Rs 7,360 crore and aims to bring 20 tmc more of Godavari water to the city. It will also help refresh the twin reservoirs connected to Musi. HMWS&SB’s Managing Director, Ashok Reddy, visited the site for the upcoming Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR) at Ghanpur on Saturday. He instructed officials to speed up the work on reservoirs and water treatment facilities.

Ashok Reddy examined potential issues like road crossings and tunneling along the 56-kilometer pipeline from Ghanpur to Osman Sagar. He said the project would immediately include an 80 million liter MBR and large Water Treatment Plants with 1,170 MLD capacity each at Ghanpur and Shamirpet.

Currently, under phase 1 of the project, HMWS&SB draws 10 tmcft of water each year from the Yellampalli project. Phases 2 and 3 will bring an additional 20 TMC from Mallanna Sagar reservoir.

Of this water, 17.5 TMC will be dedicated to Hyderabad’s drinking needs, while 2.5 TMC will go towards rejuvenating the Musi River and its twin reservoirs.

“The project offers dual benefits by meeting Hyderabad’s increasing water needs and revitalizing Musi and the twin reservoirs,” said Ashok Reddy. He emphasized completing construction within two years, after which the city will receive 300 MGD of water daily. The inspection was attended by project director TV Sridhar, CGM Mahesh Kumar, and other senior officials.
