Hyderabad is bringing a fun twist to Raksha Bandhan this year with rakhis featuring popular cartoon characters like Doraemon, Chhota Bheem, Shinchan, and Spiderman. These playful designs are now widely available in the markets.
Raksha Bandhan is more than a festival; it celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie colorful rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing protection and love. In return, brothers promise to support their sisters always. Each rakhi tells a story of tradition, artistry, and skilled craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima, August 9. Children enjoy wearing rakhis that feature their favorite characters, making the occasion even more personal and enjoyable. The traditional rakhi has evolved from simple threads to vibrant designs that captivate kids. In Hyderabad’s busy Dhoolpet area, Satyanarayan Rakhi Ghar continues a legacy of crafting rakhis for over 75 years.
Satyanarayan, the shop owner, explains, “We begin making rakhis two months before the festival. Our joint family, with 20 members, works together in this family business.” Their dedication to creating beautiful designs is evident in each thread. They source materials from Kolkata, Ahmadabad, and Delhi and gather as a family to craft each rakhi. Women string pearls, sons sort beads, and elders guide the designs, all contributing to this creative endeavor. The shop’s shelves are filled with rakhis made from pearls, stones, Rudrakshas, and lights, each uniquely handcrafted.
For the little ones, Satyanarayan’s family prepares special rakhis with characters like Doremon, Chhota Bheem, Pokemon, and Spiderman. “We have rakhis for every age, and we know kids love their favorite characters, so we make them feel special too,” explains Satyanarayan. Prices range from Rs 15 to Rs 90 based on size, and there are also rakhis with silver and gold plating available from Rs 80 to Rs 350.
