Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is excited to share that its Director, Prof. B. S. Murty, has been elected as President of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). This respected organization connects professionals in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from academia, industry, and research. Prof. Murty’s new role was announced at the 79th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of IIM in Kolkata. He will start his term on August 1, 2025.

Prof. Murty takes over from Sajjan Jindal, the Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group, who was the previous President. Prof. Murty plans to lead IIM with a focus on increasing its scientific and technological influence. At the AGM, he highlighted his goal to “continue the organization’s rich tradition while furthering its vision and mission.”

He aims to boost involvement with young professionals and set up active platforms for sharing knowledge, spreading technology, and fostering collaboration across sectors. “Building strong connections between IIM and its stakeholders in industry, academia, and research, both in India and abroad, will be a top priority,” he said.

Prof. Murty has over 40 years of experience in the field. He started with a Diploma in Metallurgy in 1983, earned a Bachelor’s degree from VRCE Nagpur, and completed his Master’s and PhD at IISc Bangalore. He has held important roles at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras. Since 2019, he’s been the Director of IIT Hyderabad, and his current term lasts until 2030.

Internationally renowned for his work in non-equilibrium materials processing and high entropy alloys, Prof. Murty has published over 500 journal articles, guided 56 PhD students, completed 75 projects worth Rs 200 crore, and holds more than 15 patents. His awards include the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, the National Metallurgist Award, an honorary doctorate from Deakin University, and several lifetime achievement awards.

He is a Fellow of all three Indian science academies and the World Academy of Sciences.

Founded in 1946 with just 42 members, the Indian Institute of Metals has grown to include over 10,000 professionals. Under Prof. Murty’s leadership, IIM aims to enhance India’s status in metallurgy, materials science, and manufacturing technology.
