In Hyderabad’s Old City, Yamuna Pathak, the national women’s president of the Vishwa Hindu Raksha Parishad, has begun an indefinite hunger strike. She is demanding that the government take action to stop the illegal occupation of land belonging to the Misri Ganj Gopala Krishna Swamy Temple.
On Saturday, Yamuna Pathak criticized the government for not responding to repeated complaints about the encroachment. She said that even though they provided official documents proving the land belongs to the temple, no steps have been taken. She questioned how houses were built and door numbers were issued on land that legally belongs to the temple. She also said the situation shows a lack of law and order in the Old City and called the government’s silence undemocratic.
Pathak warned that if the government does not act soon, the situation could worsen. She declared that she would continue her hunger strike until the temple land is restored. She believes protecting temple property is important not only for the Hindu community but also for the integrity of the government.
Earlier, under Pathak’s leadership, the organization has been working to protect temples and their lands in the Old City. Advocate Gopal Sharma, another member of the group, recently spoke during a public grievance program called Prajavani. He urged officials to take strict action against those who have taken over temple lands.
After media coverage by HMTV brought attention to the issue, officials from the Endowments Department and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) responded. They cleaned and painted the Misri Ganj Gopala Krishna Swamy Temple, helping improve its appearance and accessibility for worshippers.
Since then, the temple has seen a large number of devotees visiting. Many gathered to take part in spiritual activities, including the chanting of Vishnu Sahasra Nama, which created a peaceful and devotional atmosphere.
