A young woman named Geetanjali Devi from Tenali committed suicide due to alleged social media trolling by leaders from the TDP and Jana Sena parties. She had recently received a house in Jagananna Colony and spoke about it in interviews on YouTube, which led to trolling. Traumatized by the online harassment, Geetanjali went to the Tenali Railway Station on March 7 and jumped in front of a train, passing away four days later.
After Geetanjali’s death, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for her family. The ruling YSRCP party started an online campaign called #JusticeForGeethanjali and criticized the opposition parties for their role in the incident.
Ministers from the YSRCP, including Tourism Minister Roja and Health Minister Vidadala Rajini, condemned the trolling that led to Geetanjali’s suicide. They called for strict punishment for those responsible and accused the TDP and Jana Sena leaders of online harassment.
The YSRCP women’s wing president Potula Sunitha directly targeted TDP president Chandrababu Naidu and JSP president Pawan Kalyan, questioning their actions and motives in light of Geetanjali’s tragic death.
The TDP raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Geetanjali’s death, including her visits to the YSRCP social media office and deposits in her bank account. They also demanded transparency regarding CCTV footage from the railway station and the identities of individuals accompanying her.
Guntur SP Tushar Dudi assured that the police were investigating the case thoroughly and would take action against those responsible for Geetanjali’s suicide. He mentioned tracking down social media profiles and fake accounts involved in the trolling that contributed to her tragic end.
