A strong campaign against drunk driving took place over the weekend of August 9th and 10th, 2024. This effort led to the arrest of 212 individuals for driving under the influence.
Among those apprehended were drivers of various vehicles. The police caught 165 people on two-wheelers, 10 on three-wheelers, and 34 in four-wheelers. Additionally, 3 drivers of heavy vehicles were also detained.
A particularly concerning aspect of the arrests was that 21 of the offenders had very high blood alcohol levels. Their blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) ranged from 200 mg/100 ml to as high as 550 mg/100 ml.
Everyone who was caught will have to appear before the court to face legal proceedings.
The authorities have warned that anyone who drives under the influence and causes accidents resulting in fatalities will face serious consequences. Such individuals could be arrested and charged under section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This charge carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail and a fine.
