Hyderabad: The Telangana BC Commission has asked the Central Government to recognize the state’s efforts in conducting a caste survey and to support the new reservation bills. The Commission wants these bills added to the 9th Schedule of the Constitution, which would protect them from legal challenges.
Speaking at a press conference, BC Commission Chairman G Niranjan, along with members Rapolu Jaiprakash and Tirumalagiri Surender, highlighted the importance of the work done in Telangana. They welcomed the Union Cabinet's recent decision to include Backward Class (BC) data in the upcoming population census. They pointed out that Telangana had already completed a detailed and scientific caste survey.
According to the survey, 56.36% of Telangana’s population belongs to BC communities. Based on this data, the Telangana Assembly passed two key bills on March 17, proposing 42% reservations for BCs in education, jobs, and political representation. These bills are now waiting for the Centre’s approval to become law.
The Commission also explained that local body elections, including Gram Panchayat, MPTC, and ZPTC elections, have been delayed since January 2024. This delay aims to implement the proposed 42% BC reservations fairly.
To gather accurate data, the state conducted a massive survey covering over 1.12 crore families. A team of nearly 1.03 lakh enumerators and supervisors visited households across Telangana. They collected information directly from citizens and uploaded it through a digital system.
The BC Commission urged the Telangana State Government to actively push for the Centre’s support. They recommended that state leaders, along with representatives from all political parties, meet with the Prime Minister to present their case and seek approval for the reservation laws.
