Hyderabad: Congress and BRS corporators in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) are facing pressure from both their voters and their party leaders. This situation has become tense ahead of the upcoming local body MLC elections, as the BJP (saffron party) accuses both Congress and BRS corporators of secretly supporting the AIMIM (Majlis) candidate.

A BRS corporator explained that while they could simply follow their party’s direction, things are not that simple. “Banners have started to appear in areas represented by our corporators, and we feel like we are under a microscope. Voters are watching us closely,” the corporator said.

These banners began showing up over the weekend. They were reportedly put up by groups calling themselves Hindus and Hindu Bandhus, urging corporators not to vote for the AIMIM candidate. The banners claimed that AIMIM leaders had insulted Hindu gods and festivals and made anti-Hindu comments.

The people behind the banners have not been identified, but their goal seems to be raising awareness among voters about AIMIM’s alleged anti-Hindu remarks. They specifically pointed to AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi for mocking Bathukamma, a state festival in Telangana. The controversy has also been fueled by past statements made by his brother, MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, and a recent meeting that criticized the State Waqf Board’s claims over residential properties.

When asked about the situation, a Congress corporator said he had not received any official voting instructions from his party. He also mentioned that he was not aware of any similar direction from the BRS. As a result, many corporators now feel caught in the middle and are considering how to respond to the growing pressure from voters in their areas.
