Hyderabad: The Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ghan Shyam Prasad, has assured full support to Telangana’s power companies to help ensure an uninterrupted power supply across the state.
During a high-level meeting held in Hyderabad on Tuesday, the CEA chief reviewed various aspects of the state’s power sector. These included the current demand and supply of electricity, future resource planning, progress on renewable energy goals, ongoing projects, and the kind of assistance the state needs from the CEA.
Telangana Energy Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania and TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Farooqui informed the CEA Chairperson about the steps being taken to meet the rising electricity demand. They said that power companies are committed to providing 24-hour supply to farmers and are also working hard to meet growing demand in the industrial and domestic sectors. Efforts are also being made to meet green energy goals and Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets.
The Central Electricity Authority had earlier estimated that Telangana’s peak power demand in the financial year 2025 would be 16,877 megawatts (MW). However, the actual peak demand reached 17,162 MW on March 20 this year. The CEA’s forecast also says the state’s peak demand could rise to 24,215 MW by 2030 and 31,809 MW by 2035. In the Greater Hyderabad area alone, demand could reach 9,089 MW by 2030.
Officials pointed out that the CEA’s Resource Adequacy Plan for 2024-25 to 2034-35 should be updated to reflect the higher power demand already seen in the current financial year.
