Hyderabad is experiencing a significant increase in dengue cases this year. Out of Telangana’s 33 districts, ten have reported the highest number of dengue cases. Hyderabad, the state capital, is at the top of the list with over 1,800 cases reported in government hospitals over the past eight months.
In addition to dengue, Chikungunya cases have also seen a rise this season. Hyderabad is once again the most affected district, with 61 cases reported so far. Officials have explained that seasonal diseases like dengue and Chikungunya usually peak in August and September due to the rainy season, which leads to an increase in mosquito populations. This year, the number of dengue cases has been particularly high. From January 1 to August 25, a total of 5,372 dengue cases were reported out of 81,932 samples tested, resulting in a positive rate of 6.5%.
The ten districts with the highest number of dengue cases are Hyderabad (1,852), Suryapet (471), Medchal Malkajgiri (426), Khammam (375), Nalgonda (315), Nizamabad (286), Rangareddy (232), Jagtial (185), Sangareddy (160), and Warangal (110).
Similarly, Chikungunya cases have also surged this year. Between January 1 and August 25, 152 cases were reported out of 2,673 samples tested, with a positive rate of 5%. The districts at high risk for Chikungunya are Hyderabad (61 cases), Wanaparthy (17 cases), and Mahabubnagar (19 cases). Meanwhile, the total number of reported malaria cases during the same period was 191 out of 23,19,283 samples tested, resulting in a positivity rate of 0.008%.
In response to the rising number of fever cases, the State government initiated a fever survey on July 23. By August 25, health department officials had visited 1,42,78,723 houses and screened 4,40,06,799 people. During the survey, 2,65,324 fever cases were identified.
Officials also mentioned that there are currently 42 T-Hub labs operating across the state with sufficient testing capabilities. Additionally, 53 blood banks are functioning with adequate blood supplies. In all 33 districts, 108 ambulances are operational, and essential medicines and resources for malaria treatment are readily available.
