Hyderabad: NALSAR University of Law, in partnership with the Law Commission of India, hosted a one-day conference focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Law, and Justice in India. This event, held on Saturday at NALSAR, gathered experts from various fields such as government, academia, legal technology, and industry to discuss how AI is changing the legal landscape.
The conference aimed to explore how AI could be integrated into the legal and judicial systems in India. As the Supreme Court of India is already using AI tools like SUPACE, and AI technology is being incorporated into the e-Courts Modernization Phase III, the discussions centered on both the potential benefits and the challenges of using AI in law. Participants attended sessions titled “AI in Law and Justice in India: Present and Future” and “AI and Principle of Justice & Implications for Justice (Chat GPT, Generative AI, and Emerging Trends).”
Key speakers included Rama Devi Lanka, Director of Emerging Technologies, and Dr. Reeta Vasishth from the Law Commission of India. They discussed how AI impacts law and justice and emphasized the need for a strong legal framework to tackle issues like data privacy and AI ethics. They highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary education and continuous learning to keep up with technological advancements. Concerns such as AI hallucinations, bias, and the loss of human empathy were also addressed, with a focus on transparency, trust-building, and regular audits.
This conference is part of NALSAR’s broader initiatives on AI, law, and justice. The university is collaborating with UNESCO on AI use in the judiciary and developing responsible AI courses with the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT-Madras.
The event concluded with a session emphasizing the importance of integrating AI into the legal system with careful consideration of ethical and legal safeguards. This conference marks the start of a series of workshops, seminars, and conferences aimed at continuing the conversation on AI, law, and justice in India.
