Garbage Troubles Grow in Rajendranagar, GHMC Steps In

Residents in the Rajendranagar area of Rangareddy are frustrated over the growing garbage problem. Trash piles are building up in several neighborhoods as garbage collection continues to be delayed. The situation has now caught the attention of officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Due to a rise in complaints about poor sanitation, K Ravi Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of GHMC Rajendranagar, began early morning visits to inspect the area. During these surprise checks, he found several troubling issues, including uncollected garbage and a lack of proper street sweeping.

On one of his visits to Shastripuram, he discovered large heaps of waste left at garbage collection points. Upset by the poor maintenance, he immediately took action. He fined Ramky Infrastructure, the private company responsible for waste treatment, ₹10,000 for failing to remove the garbage during the night.

Ramky had signed a ₹250 crore Build-Operate-Own (BOO) contract with GHMC. The agreement includes a two-year initial phase and could extend for ten years. Despite the contract, the company failed to manage waste collection effectively in the area.

Locals say the practice of dumping garbage in the open has returned, even though it had been replaced earlier by door-to-door collection. Residents blame both the public and the authorities for the mess.

Arif, a resident of Shastripuram, said, “Open dumping was banned, but now GHMC has placed containers again, encouraging people to throw garbage in the open instead of handing it to the collection teams.”

Another resident, A Anil, added, “Many people avoid paying a small monthly fee for garbage pickup. So, they go back to old habits, creating an unhealthy environment. The rules about fines and penalties exist only on paper.”

The issue highlights the gap between civic policies and their implementation. Despite strict rules, poor enforcement and lack of cooperation from both citizens and contractors continue to hurt the city’s cleanliness. GHMC’s recent action signals that the authorities are finally taking steps to fix the problem—but long-term solutions are still needed.
