Hyderabad, December 3, 2025 — A dangerous extortion racket is spreading across Hyderabad and Rangareddy, where uneducated individuals posing as media reporters are blackmailing builders, developers, and citizens using fake press IDs, fabricated news portals, and threats of HYDRAA enforcement action.
Multiple reports indicate that these fraudsters are moving across construction sites, intimidating victims, and demanding money under the guise of “protecting” them from demolition or negative publicity.
How the Fake Reporters Operate
According to sources, these fake journalists follow a systematic approach designed to frighten and financially exploit builders:
- Using forged press cards from non-existent or unknown newspapers
- Threatening HYDRA complaints, claiming constructions fall under FTL or buffer zones
- Blackmailing with “negative coverage” in random, low-circulation newspapers
- Repeated harassment, creating fear of demolition or legal trouble
- Demanding bribes ranging from thousands to lakhs of rupees
Victims describe the harassment as mentally exhausting, with some stopping construction out of fear.
Hotspots With Maximum Cases
The extortion racket is most active in:
- Rangareddy District (highest reports)
- Gachibowli (rapid construction)
- Shamshabad (airport-adjacent projects & Being a 111GO Area)
- Chevella (new real estate activity) Suburban zones witnessing fast expansion
HYDRA and the Government Had Already Issued Warnings
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath had previously warned that anyone misusing HYDRA’s name to extort money would face strict legal action, including imprisonment.
He confirmed that certain individuals — even self-proclaimed “social activists” — were threatening builders by falsely claiming that properties were in FTL or lake buffer zones.
Similarly, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy acknowledged that some ground-level officials were also misusing HYDRA’s name for corrupt activities, urging immediate cleansing of the system.
Fake YouTubers & “Media Persons” Adding to the Menace
Authorities also noted the rise of semi-literate YouTubers who:
Intimidate people using a camera and mic, Demand money to “delete footage,” Spread fake news for views, and have links with anti-social elements
Police have already arrested multiple fake media persons at official events, confirming the scale of the problem.
How the Scam Typically Unfolds
Identify ongoing construction sites. Approach with a fake press card. Threaten exposure or HYDRA complaints. Demand bribes, claiming they can “settle the issue.” Repeat harassment until the money is paid
Victims say these individuals cannot name genuine media houses or show authenticated credentials.
