The situation around the Musi River in Yadadri-Bhongir district is currently challenging due to heavy rainfall in Hyderabad on Monday night. The downpour caused the river to overflow, leading to significant disruptions in the area.
In Pochampally mandal, a low-level bridge connecting Juluru and Rudravelli villages to Bibinagar was closed after floodwaters flowed over it, stopping all traffic on the route. Similarly, in Valigonda mandal, floodwaters from the Musi River submerged a bridge between Sangeo and Bollapelli villages, forcing authorities to halt traffic there as well.
In Yadagirigutta town, the roads were waterlogged, especially the route from Yadagiripalli SC Colony to Yadagiripalli village. The situation was so severe that even a local temple became submerged.
The district has experienced significant rainfall, with Bhongir recording the highest levels. This has worsened the flooding situation. Additionally, the Musi River is severely polluted, mainly due to untreated industrial waste and sewage being dumped into it. This pollution poses serious health risks to the local population, who rely on the river for activities like irrigation and fishing.
Despite efforts such as installing a few treatment plants, pollution levels remain dangerously high. Local communities have been advocating for more comprehensive clean-up efforts, but progress has been slow.
The area is also facing issues with illegal sand mining, which has further degraded the river’s ecosystem. Activists who have tried to report these illegal activities have faced violent reprisals, highlighting the dangers faced by those working to protect the environment in the region.
