Bhadrachalam: Forest officials have taken custody of an endangered Indian vulture (Gyps indicus) that was seen in Cherla, about three days ago.

Local laborers were the first to spot the bird. They caught it, fed it chicken, and then released it. The bird had been tagged with a radio transmitter by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) on August 10 at the Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. This was part of a research project to monitor its movements.

Concerns arose when the bird’s transmitter stopped sending signals on September 30. Forest officials later found the vulture in the Pedda Midisileru area of Cherla mandal on Thursday. The bird is now being taken care of at the local forest office.
