Hyderabad: Following the Supreme Court’s order, T Prabhakar Rao, the former SIB chief and main suspect in the phone-tapping case, announced his return to India. He has informed investigators that he will attend questioning on June 5. On May 29, the court provided Rao with temporary protection from arrest. He has been living in the US since leaving Hyderabad over a year ago.
The Supreme Court’s decision followed Rao’s promise to cooperate fully with the investigation. Sources indicate that investigators are preparing for an in-depth questioning session, as his testimony is vital for advancing the case. Officials hope his interrogation will clarify the details and extent of the alleged illegal phone-tapping and surveillance activities.
In March 2024, the Hyderabad Police arrested a suspended DSP of SIB along with three other police officers. They were accused of deleting intelligence data from electronic devices and engaging in phone-tapping during the BRS regime. They were later released on bail.
