The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) are working together to stop flooding near the Ameerpet metro station and Maitrivanam. They plan to remodel and rebuild the drainage system, with a focus on widening narrow sections to reduce flooding risks.
Reports from GHMC show that the drainage channels, which should be 40 feet wide, shrink to only 10 feet when crossing Ameerpet and S R Nagar main roads. These channels come from locations like Jubilee Hills, Venkatagiri, Rahmat Nagar, and Yousufguda, and they join the main drain at Gayatri Nagar. Heavy rains cause water from Madhuranagar and Srinivas Nagar West to flood streets, affecting the Ameerpet Metro and Maitrivanam areas.
On a recent visit, GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan and HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath, along with Zonal Commissioner Anuraag Jayanti, Chief Engineer Sahadev Ratnakar, and other experts, checked the drainage issues first-hand. They looked at how to permanently manage flood levels through practical solutions. The teams are now finalizing the project plans. Before this, GHMC and HYDRAA conducted separate inspections to explore flood prevention strategies.
