Hyderabad is getting ready for the monsoon season with fast-paced efforts to stop flooding in the L B Nagar area. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched key drainage projects under the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) to fix long-standing waterlogging issues.
In recent years, intense and sudden rainfall has led to serious flooding in L B Nagar. Several colonies flood every year, causing damage and hardship for residents. Around five residential areas are affected the most. Now, with the new drainage work, officials say these colonies will stay safe from future floods.
On Thursday, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan visited ongoing development sites in L B Nagar. He reviewed the progress and told officials to speed up stormwater drain work before the rains arrive. He was joined by Zonal Commissioner Hemant Keshav Patil during the inspection.
One of the key projects is a 350-meter-long stormwater box drain being built from Nagole Sai Nagar to the RTO office. The Commissioner also checked in on the SRDP National Highway flyover and improvements being made to local sports facilities under the Bairamalguda Flyover.
Karnan directed engineers to complete all pending SNDP projects, especially in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. He asked them to report any obstacles quickly so they can be resolved.
Executive Engineer Ramesh Babu explained that the drainage system would protect nearly five colonies from being flooded. He confidently stated that the work will be completed in one month.
The Commissioner made it clear that the project must finish before the monsoon hits. The Zonal Commissioner has also been told to ensure all box drain and nala development works are completed without delay.
Later in the day, Karnan visited the SRDP flyover at Uppal X Roads and checked the National Highway expansion project stretching to Narapally CPRI.
With these efforts, GHMC hopes to keep L B Nagar flood-free and better prepared for the coming rains.
