State Government to Provide Subsidized Wheat Alongside Fine Rice Starting January
The Telangana State government has announced a new initiative to distribute subsidized wheat along with fine rice beginning in January. This move aims to help poor and middle-class families cope with the rising cost of food, especially fine rice, which has jumped significantly in price from Rs 35-40 per kilogram two years ago to Rs 60 per kilogram now.
When Telangana was formed, the government prioritized the distribution of fine rice but did not offer other essential food items. With prices soaring, many ration card holders began selling the coarse rice they received from fair price shops to buy fine rice at higher costs. The inclusion of wheat in the ration distribution is expected to ease the financial strain on these families.
Despite the positive step, concerns about the quality of rice remain a significant issue. Complaints have surfaced about substandard rice being distributed, including broken grains and rice mixed with husk. Critics urge the government to ensure that the food provided meets proper nutritional standards. Previous reports of poor-quality rice being supplied to hostels and schools have raised similar concerns about its adequacy.
Currently, both the Central and State governments provide 6 kilograms of free rice per beneficiary through ration cards. However, it has been reported that some middle-class recipients sell this rice to traders at Rs 11 per kilogram instead of consuming it. These traders reportedly use the rice for purposes like liquor production in other states.
The decision to provide fine rice and wheat is seen as a way to minimize such misuse. Gattaiah, a local ration dealer, welcomed the move, stating it would benefit the community. He added, “The supply of fine rice and wheat is a good sign. However, the government should also consider increasing the dealers’ commission to address the challenges we face.”

– Sircilla: Ration cards – 1,73,745; Beneficiaries – 4,97,103
As the program rolls out, the government’s ability to ensure quality and prevent misuse will be critical in determining its success.
