Hyderabad, July 14, 2025 — Major developments are underway along the Hyderabad-Bijapur National Highway (NH-163), as authorities begin the construction of two strategic bypass roads in the Moinabad and Chevella regions to decongest town centers and accelerate the highway expansion.
The 46-kilometer stretch from Appa Junction to Manneguda is set for a significant upgrade to a four-lane carriageway, but due to environmental and land acquisition hurdles on the main route, progress had temporarily stalled.
NGT Case Delays Main Road Expansion
A case filed with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the lack of a tree protection plan—particularly for 915 heritage banyan trees—has halted work on the main road widening. Until the matter is resolved, the focus has shifted to completing bypass roads to maintain the project timeline.
Bypass Roads in Focus
The first bypass, near Moinabad, spans approximately 4.8 kilometers, beginning at JB IT and connecting to the main road near the Taj Hotel junction. This bypass aims to divert highway traffic away from congested local areas, especially the Moinabad town center.
The second bypass, located on the outskirts of Chevella, starts at Kesaram village and stretches about 6 kilometers, merging back into the main highway near Ibrahimpally village.
Both bypasses are designed to be 60 meters wide, requiring substantial land acquisition. Authorities have reportedly acquired 135 hectares and disbursed nearly ₹200 crore in compensation. However, a portion of the Chevella alignment is still facing land disputes, slowing progress in that segment.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
As part of the development:
-
Earthwork and gravel compression has been completed along much of the bypass stretch.
-
An underpass is being constructed to connect the Surangal and Sri Rama Nagar routes without routing through Moinabad town.
-
Four culverts are also under construction to manage water flow and prevent erosion.
-
Once completed, the bypass roads will provide seamless travel for long-distance vehicles, especially those heading toward Shabad and surrounding areas.
These bypass roads are expected to be a game-changer for traffic flow and connectivity between the ORR, Moinabad, and Chevella. They will not only reduce travel time for commuters but also ease congestion for local residents and provide alternative routes for heavy vehicles.
As the city continues to expand outward, such infrastructure projects are critical to supporting Hyderabad’s future growth corridors.
