AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, reiterated his belief that Hyderabad could become a Union Territory (UT) in the future. He also suggested that cities like Bangalore, Chennai, and Mumbai might also become UTs along with Hyderabad.

During a discussion on the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, Owaisi expressed his views in 2021. However, the then Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy, stated that the Union government had no plans to make Hyderabad or any other city a Union Territory. He condemned Owaisi’s statement and pointed out that he had made similar remarks during the agitation for separate Telangana.
