Hyderabad is taking a big step toward a healthier and greener future. GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Commissioner RV Karnan have kicked off a major tree planting campaign under the VanaMahotsavam initiative. The effort started at Shirdi Hills Colony in the Kukatpally Zone, aiming to plant 2.5 million saplings across Greater Hyderabad.
The Mayor, inspired by the ‘Green Legacy’ idea, calls on all citizens to join in transforming the city. “Our goal is to plant 25 lakh saplings this year with the public’s help,” said Mayor Vijayalakshmi. She mentioned that saplings would be given to every household, encouraging residents to participate throughout the planting season.
The campaign features a touching slogan, ‘Ek ped, Maa ke naam’ (One tree in the name of mother), urging people to plant a tree in honor of their mothers. The Mayor stressed the importance of not only planting but also caring for the trees to ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
Commissioner Karnan highlighted the program’s aim to make Hyderabad greener by setting specific targets for each ward. He emphasized the importance of nurturing the saplings, saying, “More focus will be on nurturing the plants rather than just planting them.”
Students actively participated in the launch, chanting “Go Green” alongside the Mayor and Commissioner, showing strong community support for this important environmental initiative. Others present included Kukatpally Zonal Commissioner Apurva Chauhan, UBD Additional Commissioner Subhadra Devi, and Corporator Ravula Seshagiri Rao.
