Hyderabad: Some lakes in Hyderabad are facing a strange and serious problem—foamy water. To help solve this issue and clean the water, a group of lake lovers is starting a special project called the ‘Bio Enzyme Drive’ at Barla Kunta Lake in Gachibowli. This effort aims to restore and purify the lake in an eco-friendly way.

A bio enzyme is a natural cleaner made using good bacteria. Similar to how probiotics help our health, these enzymes help clean the lake. It is safe for the environment and also cheap. A city-based NGO called Dhruvansh is organizing the drive as part of the World Earth Day celebrations on April 26.

Madhulika Choudhary, founder of Dhruvansh, said, “We did a similar bio enzyme drive at Neknampur Lake in 2022, and it worked really well. So now we’re doing the same at Barla Kunta Lake, which is about 4 acres in size. We’ll need around 1,000 litres of enzyme for this. To make it, we’re collecting fruit and vegetable peels. We’re also asking people to make their own bio enzymes and bring them on the day of the event.”

She explained how to make a bio enzyme at home. “Just mix one part jaggery, three parts fruit or vegetable peels, and ten parts water. Store it in a sealed bottle for a month, and it will be ready. One litre of this enzyme can clean up to 1,000 litres of dirty water,” she added.

Madhulika also shared the benefits of using bio enzymes. “They reduce the bad smell and harmful chemicals in the water. While normal household waste is easy to break down, strong cleaning products like Harpic and Lysol are not. If we start using bio enzymes instead, the water from our homes will be much safer for lakes.”

She emphasized that the goal of the drive is not only to clean the lake but also to get communities involved and teach people how to make their household waste more eco-friendly.
