Hyderabad: In a major push towards urban infrastructure modernization, the city is set to undergo a massive ₹1,340 crore streetlighting overhaul, covering nearly 7.6 lakh streetlights across the Greater Hyderabad region. The initiative is aimed at improving public safety, energy efficiency, and reliability of lighting systems under the Smart City and urban development framework.

Officials revealed that over 70% of the existing streetlights in the city are nearing the end of their operational life, prompting the need for a comprehensive replacement and upgrade plan. The project will be executed through a single unified tender that includes replacement, operation, and long-term maintenance of the lighting network.

Key Features of the Streetlight Upgrade

  • 7.6 lakh streetlights to be upgraded or replaced
  • ₹1,340 crore investment covering installation and maintenance
  • LED-based energy-efficient lighting systems to reduce power consumption
  • Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for real-time tracking
  • Unified contract model for seamless execution and accountability

Focus on Efficiency and Accountability

Under the new tender conditions, the selected agency will be responsible for ensuring uninterrupted street lighting with minimal downtime. The system introduces strict performance-based penalties to maintain service quality.

  • ₹100 per streetlight per day penalty for non-functioning lights
  • ₹1,500 per day penalty for faults in the CCMS system

This approach is expected to significantly improve maintenance standards and ensure quick resolution of faults across the city.

Smart Monitoring and Digital Tracking

A key highlight of the project is the introduction of mandatory digital monitoring. Authorities will maintain detailed records of each streetlight, including:

  • Photographic documentation of old and newly installed lights
  • Unique identification numbers for every light point
  • Tracking of CCMS control boxes for centralized operations

Energy Savings and Smart City Goals

The transition to LED lighting is expected to reduce energy consumption significantly while improving brightness and coverage. Officials say the project aligns with Hyderabad’s broader vision of becoming a smart and sustainable city, leveraging technology to improve civic services.

Similar LED streetlight upgrades in other major cities have resulted in 30–50% energy savings, and Hyderabad is expected to achieve comparable efficiency gains.

Improved Public Safety and Urban Mobility

Better street lighting plays a crucial role in road safety, crime prevention, and nighttime mobility. With consistent illumination across roads, colonies, and public spaces, the upgraded system is expected to enhance overall urban living conditions.

Implementation Timeline

While the tender process is currently underway, the project is expected to be implemented in phases once the contract is awarded. Authorities aim to complete the overhaul within a defined timeline to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth transition.

With this large-scale initiative, Hyderabad is taking a significant step toward modernizing its urban infrastructure, improving efficiency, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
