Hyderabad has achieved the rank of the sixth cleanest city in India according to the Swachh Survekshan rankings. The city earned a seven-star rating in this national cleanliness survey run by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
In previous years, Hyderabad ranked ninth in 2023-24 and tenth in 2022-23. This year, it stands out as the first city in Telangana to receive a seven-star rating for being garbage-free and has been recognized as a ‘Water Plus’ city for the fourth year in a row.
Among cities with populations over 10 lakhs, Hyderabad was ranked sixth. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) excelled in seven out of eight categories, achieving full marks. These categories included waste collection, waste processing, residential and market area cleanliness, water body cleanliness, and public toilet maintenance. The only area where it scored lower, at 93%, was in source segregation.
Additionally, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) topped all Cantonment Boards in the country and ranked 11th among medium cities with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakhs.
GHMC received the ‘State Level Award’ for being the most promising clean city in Telangana. The award was presented by Manohar Lal during the Swachh Survekshan 2024 Awards Ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The event was presided over by President Droupadi Murmu and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal.
GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi congratulated the GHMC Commissioner, officers, staff, and sanitation workers for their efforts in achieving this recognition. She expressed that the award increases their responsibility and determination to enhance Hyderabad’s standing in cleanliness, greenery, and health nationwide.
The Mayor highlighted that this achievement is due to ongoing cleanliness efforts by GHMC, the dedication of sanitation workers, and community support.
