Hyderabad experienced a welcome break from the heat as unseasonal rains cooled the city over the past 24 hours. The sudden showers hint at the early arrival of the monsoon across southern India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a significant temperature drop in the city. The maximum temperature dipped to 32.6°C, which is 7°C below the average for this time of year. The minimum temperature also fell to 23.0°C, marking a 4°C drop. Rainfall in the past day measured 39 mm, and humidity levels reached 93% in the morning.
Rain is expected to continue across Telangana over the next week. In Hyderabad, residents can expect light to moderate showers, with gusty winds blowing at 40–50 km/h. Cloudy skies will dominate, and temperatures will stay near 32°C during the day and 24°C at night on Thursday.
For the next 48 hours, the city may see partly cloudy skies with continued rainfall. Wind speeds could range between 30–40 km/h.
In other parts of Telangana, the rain was more intense. Areas in Medak saw heavy to very heavy downpours, while Siddipet, Suryapet, Jagtial, Kamareddy, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, and Warangal also reported scattered heavy rain.
The changing weather is linked to a low-pressure system forming over the east-central Arabian Sea, near south Konkan and Goa. This system developed on Thursday morning and is expected to move northward, strengthening into a depression within 36 hours, with more intensification likely.
Another contributing factor is a trough extending from the Arabian Sea to North Telangana, located between 1.5 and 5.8 km above sea level. This trough is helping to maintain the current rain activity.
The southwest monsoon is likely to hit Kerala in the next 2–3 days, according to the IMD. This will lead to its gradual spread over the south Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and parts of the Bay of Bengal and northeast India.
In addition, a new low-pressure area might form over the west-central Bay of Bengal around May 27. It could strengthen over the following 48 hours, bringing more rain to the region.
Until May 28, Telangana is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, with isolated thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures will likely stay 3–5°C below normal.
