Hyderabad: Junior doctors have approached Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, asking for his help in bringing in a Central Protection Act to ensure the safety and security of healthcare professionals.
On Wednesday, the junior doctors’ strike entered its eighth day. Medical students from Osmania, Gandhi, and ESI Hospitals protested at the NIMS premises. They were demanding justice for a medical student from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. As part of their protest, the doctors organized flash mobs at NIMS to raise awareness among patients and their families about the violence and atrocities committed against women.
The doctors expressed their frustration over the lack of action against those responsible for the incident in Kolkata. They urged both the Central and State governments to take steps to ensure the safety of doctors. Dr. Deepika, a junior doctor from Gandhi Hospital, emphasized that the situation in Kolkata could easily happen in Hyderabad as well. She explained that doctors in Hyderabad face similar abuses and lack security. Dr. Deepika questioned why the real culprits in Kolkata had not yet been exposed and wondered why the West Bengal government had remained silent.
Dr. Deepika also noted that the doctors are not boycotting OPD services without reason. She pointed out that the Supreme Court has taken up the issue of providing security to doctors, but nothing specific has been done regarding the incident in Kolkata.
Later in the day, a group of junior doctors met with Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy to seek his support for the introduction of a Central Protection Act aimed at safeguarding the doctors.
