Hyderabad/New Delhi: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy spoke about the central government’s new 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill. This bill aims to automatically remove any Prime Minister, Union Minister, Chief Minister, or State Minister from office if they are jailed for 30 days. The bill will be discussed in the Rajya Sabha today before going to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for review.
On Thursday, Reddy addressed the media in New Delhi, calling this bill a significant reform to maintain constitutional standards. He highlighted the strong support from intellectuals, media, and the public. Reddy questioned why elected officials should not face the same consequences as government employees, who are suspended after 48 hours in jail.
Reddy criticized the Congress party for their negative response in the Lok Sabha, labeling it as “unfortunate” and “hypocritical.” He reminded the media of past leaders like LK Advani and Amit Shah, who resigned due to moral reasons, and the Jharkhand CM who did the same.
He argued that the Constitution’s framers never expected ministers to run offices from jail. He mentioned former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji as examples of ministers allegedly working from prison.
Reddy accused the Congress of lacking ethics, recalling the 39th Constitutional Amendment under Indira Gandhi and an ordinance to protect Lalu Prasad Yadav. He pointed out that now Rahul Gandhi and Lalu Prasad are aligned, calling it part of Congress’s culture.
Reddy reaffirmed the BJP’s dedication to ethical governance and constitutional integrity. He cited the Citizenship Amendment Act, the end of triple talaq, and the modernization of old laws as examples of their reforms. “We joined politics to serve the nation, not for power,” Reddy stated.
