Hyderabad police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving, booking a large number of offenders over the past week.
Cyberabad traffic police caught 272 people driving under the influence during weekend night checks at various locations under their jurisdiction. Of these, 189 were riding two-wheelers, 12 were driving auto-rickshaws, 66 were in cars, and 5 were operating heavy vehicles.
Among those caught, 27 individuals had extremely high blood alcohol concentrations (BAC), ranging from 200 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml. These offenders will be taken to court for legal proceedings.
The Miyapur area recorded the highest number of cases with 50, followed by Shamshabad with 43, and both Shadnagar and Chevella with 32 each.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, Hyderabad police registered 1,039 drunk driving cases between May 3 and May 9. This drive revealed that 890 offenders were riding two-wheelers, 47 were in auto-rickshaws, 100 were car drivers, and 2 were heavy vehicle operators.
Shockingly, 54 people had a BAC of 200 mg/100 ml or higher, showing dangerously high levels of alcohol in their systems. The data also showed that 16 offenders were between the ages of 18 and 20, indicating a troubling trend of underage drinking and driving.
The largest group of offenders fell in the 21–30 age group, accounting for 417 cases. Next were 345 drivers aged 31–40, followed by 162 in the 41–50 age range.
Police expressed concern over the involvement of young people in both underage drinking and driving while drunk. While traffic police are taking action against the offenders, the law and order department has been tasked with investigating how minors are getting access to alcohol.
Authorities have issued a serious warning. Anyone caught driving under the influence and causing an accident that leads to death could face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This law treats such cases as culpable homicide not amounting to murder, carrying a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a hefty fine.
Police are urging the public to act responsibly and avoid driving after consuming alcohol. They emphasized that strict legal action will be taken to ensure road safety.
