Hyderabad: A large number of Muslims held protests across Hyderabad on Friday against the new Waqf Act. The demonstrations began after Friday prayers, with many people gathering at places like the historic Mecca Masjid. Protesters demanded that the government immediately withdraw the Act.
People held signs and shouted slogans to show their strong disagreement with the proposed changes. They believe the new law could harm Waqf properties and take away the rights of the Muslim community.
In preparation for the protests, police were sent to several areas, including Saidabad, Mehdipatnam, Bahadurpura, and Charminar. DCP South Zone Sneha Mehra arranged for extra security in sensitive areas, especially around the Old City and Charminar. Barricades were set up, and police officers were stationed to keep the peace.
In Saidabad, a group protested near Ujale Shah Eidgah with support from the Joint Action Committee. Another protest was held at Darul Shifa by the Darsgah Jihad-O-Shahadat (DJS) group. They raised slogans against the Central Government and demanded that the Act be rolled back.
The DJS warned that if the Act is not withdrawn, they will continue and strengthen their protests in the coming days.
Community leaders and activists say the new Waqf Act reduces Muslim control over Waqf lands and properties. They fear it could allow the government to take over these lands, which could lead to the loss of important religious and historical sites.
