Hyderabad: Osmania University’s famous Arts College building has now become a trademarked structure. This means it is officially recognized for its unique design, just like some of the world’s most iconic buildings such as the Empire State Building in the USA, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and in India, the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai.
With this honor, the OU Arts College becomes the third building in India to receive such a prestigious trademark. The official trademark certificate was registered on April 19, 2025. It was handed over to Osmania University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Kumar Molugaram, by Subhajit Saha, a trademark attorney and founder of Resolute4IP.
Professor Molugaram called this achievement a “historic milestone” for the university. He said the trademark not only highlights the building’s stunning architecture and historical value but also improves Osmania University’s image around the world. He added that this recognition helps protect the building’s legacy and is a proud moment for all OU alumni.
The Arts College building was designed by Belgian architect Ernest Jasper and was opened in 1939. The structure is a blend of different architectural styles, including Qutub Shahi, Mughal, and Kakatiya. It also draws inspiration from the ancient Ajanta and Ellora caves. The building is known for its unique features like vaulted roofs, rounded domes, shield-shaped structures, and pointed arches. Unlike most buildings from the Nizam era that have a single dome, this one stands out with its creative and inclusive design, symbolizing the university’s commitment to education and culture.
A senior university official said, “This is a proud moment that adds to Osmania University’s long and rich history. It now stands out globally as a protector of heritage, a center of learning, and a place of innovation.”
