Hyderabad: Many streetlights in Hyderabad are not working properly, causing problems for both residents and commuters. People say the dark roads have led to frequent accidents, and despite making several complaints, the issue remains unresolved.
Recent heavy rains and strong winds have damaged the wiring of many streetlights, making the problem worse. While the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is responsible for over 5 lakh streetlights in the city, many of them are still not working.
Residents say that streetlights in several areas have been out for over a month. These areas include Ameerpet, Yousufguda, Tolichowki, Mehdipatnam, Shaikpet, Basheerbagh, Nampally, Red Hills, Vijaynagar, Malakpet, Santosh Nagar, and parts of the Old City.
In these dark areas, it becomes difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to pass safely. People also report an increase in stray dog attacks and anti-social activities due to the lack of lighting. “In Yousufguda, the streets are completely dark. It feels unsafe at night,” said Krishank, a local resident.
Even upscale neighborhoods like the Ministers’ Quarters, MLA Colony, and roads in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills are affected. “On some roads in Banjara Hills, only two out of ten lights work. The road near the police station is completely dark,” Krishank added.
Commuters, especially those on two-wheelers, are at higher risk. “Some lights were installed a few months ago but they only work now and then,” said Mohammed Ahmed, an activist from the Old City.
Ahmed mentioned that despite several promises from officials, nothing has been fixed. “In areas like Ramnaspura and Bahadurpura, the roads are barely visible at night, especially after rain. I often see motorists losing control while riding through these stretches,” he said.
Flyovers like those in Begumpet and Narayanguda also suffer from poor lighting. Commuters say the low visibility makes driving dangerous and increases the chances of accidents.
Asif Hussain Sohail from Surya Nagar colony said that the number of stray dog chases has gone up in dark areas, causing bikers to lose balance and crash. He believes the problem exists because the streetlights are not properly linked to the Central Control and Monitoring System (CCMS), which manages them.
Residents are urging the authorities to fix the streetlights as soon as possible to ensure safe travel for everyone.
