Gadwal: The Priyadarshini Jurala Project (PJP) on the Krishna River is currently experiencing large water inflows. This situation has led the authorities to open the spillway gates to manage the rising water levels effectively. At 9:00 AM today, the dam’s water level reached 317.370 meters (1,041.240 feet), which is just below the Full Reservoir Level of 318.516 meters.
The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 7.407 TMC and a live storage capacity of 3.700 TMC. The Full Reservoir Level or Gross Capacity is 318.516 meters, up to 9.657 TMC. A significant inflow of 1,45,000 cusecs is due to upstream rainfall and river contributions. To prevent overflow, 1,17,048 cusecs have been released through 12 spillway gates.
The hydroelectric power plant at PJP is generating electricity with 26,939 cusecs of water being used for power production. Additionally, 43 cusecs have evaporated, which is typical in hot weather.
Water releases are also supporting irrigation and lift schemes. The Nettampadu Lift receives 750 cusecs, and the Koilsagar Lift gets 315 cusecs. The Left Main Canal (LMC) is allocated 1,030 cusecs, while the Right Main Canal (RMC) receives 600 cusecs, including 150 cusecs through the RDS Link Canal. The Parallel Canal is supplied with 800 cusecs. No water is reported for the Bhima Lift-I & II or other drawals.
The total outflow from the dam is 1,47,525 cusecs, which helps balance the inflow and supports regional irrigation and power needs.
Officials from the irrigation department are closely monitoring the situation. With more rainfall expected upstream, the dam’s operations are being managed carefully. Downstream farmers and residents are urged to stay updated with local authority announcements, particularly those in low-lying areas along the Krishna River.
The PJP is crucial for power generation, irrigation, and drinking water in the region. The project continues to achieve its multiple purposes while ensuring safety with efficient management.
