Hyderabad has seen significant action against illegal cattle activities. In the past two months, over 2,000 cattle have been saved from mafia operations across various districts in Telangana. This success is due to the teamwork of the Gau Gyan Foundation, Telangana Police, and the State Government, leading to more than 50 FIRs being filed.
The rescued cattle faced severe mistreatment and cruelty. They endured harsh conditions, were improperly handled, and often abused. Procedures like castration, dehorning, and branding were performed without any pain relief. During transport to feedlots and slaughterhouses, they suffered electric shocks, beatings, and were deprived of food and water. Packed tightly in trucks, they sustained broken limbs, injuries, and infections. Disturbingly, young calves were sometimes killed in front of their mothers.
Several laws, including the Telangana State Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act 1977, the PCA Act 1960, and the Transport of Animals Rules 1978, clearly state that such activities are illegal in India. The Supreme Court and High Court of AP & Telangana have also ruled against these practices. To combat illegal cattle transport, the Telangana police have established checkposts and cattle holding centers with veterinary support across state and district borders.
