Hyderabad: The police stationed at the University of Hyderabad (HCU) have been withdrawn after a request from Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka. This decision was influenced by appeals from civil society groups and university faculty members, who were concerned about the extended presence of police on campus.
In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of HCU, Mr. Bhatti advised the university to take care of its own security. He highlighted that universities should be autonomous and responsible for maintaining peace within their campuses.
“The use of outside security forces at a university should only happen in extreme cases,” Mr. Bhatti said. “Considering the current situation and recent requests, we believe the university can manage its own affairs.”
The police withdrawal comes after several weeks of tension and unrest at the university, caused by student and administrative issues. Many civil rights groups and academics had raised concerns that the police presence was affecting the learning environment and student well-being.
So far, university officials have not made an official statement. However, sources say the administration is looking into improving its internal security systems based on the Deputy CM’s suggestions.
The atmosphere at the university is now calm. Students are hopeful that this move will help bring a sense of normalcy back to campus life.
