Hyderabad: On December 8, Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh criticized the Telangana government for its plan to rename a road near the US Consulate in Hyderabad after Donald Trump. Singh argued that the road should honor one of the Telangana martyrs who gave their lives for the state. In a video statement, he expressed disapproval of the Telangana Rising Global Summit, stating, “The state gains nothing from this event,” and noted that crores of rupees were spent on it.
Singh questioned Chief Minister Revanth Reddy about choosing Trump’s name for the road, suggesting it could be named after a local hero instead. He also proposed the name Bhagyanagar and urged the government to rethink its decision.
The Telangana government’s announcement to rename the road came just before the Telangana Rising Global Summit, scheduled from December 8-9. According to a press release from the chief minister’s office, the road will be called ‘Donald Trump Avenue’. Additionally, a new greenfield radial road will be named after Ratan Tata, with a section known as the ‘Tata Interchange’.
The government plans to consult with the Union Ministry of External Affairs and the US Embassy for the Donald Trump Avenue proposal. Moreover, a prominent road will be named ‘Google Street’ to acknowledge Google’s influence, as their largest campus outside the US is being built in Hyderabad’s Financial District. The release also hinted at future recognitions for Microsoft and Wipro with designated roads and junctions as part of the state’s vision.
