The Singareni Thermal Power Station in Jaipur, Mancherial district, has won a national award for its efforts to help the environment. The Mission Energy Foundation presented the award for the best use of water in thermal power plants, in the southern states category. The award was given to K.S.N. Prasad, the Assistant General Manager of the plant.
Most thermal power plants are allowed by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to use up to 3 cubic metres of water for every 1 mw of power generation if their capacity is more than 500 mw. However, the Singareni plant only uses 2.69 cubic metres of water by using the best practices in the field. The plant has won this award for two years in a row.
The Singareni plant has been using a high concentrated slurry disposal system and an effluent treatment plant to reuse water effectively. Regular monitoring of water usage has also helped to save water at the plant.
